NBL1 Central champ joins Rip City

Written by Greg Dawkins

The University of Sunshine Coast Basketball Club has signed Verle Williams III for the 2022 NBL1 North season. The 180cm guard joins the Rip City men's team from NBL1 Central 2021 champions North Adelaide Rockets, where he averaged 15.68 points per game.

“My expectations are very high,” Williams said. “I believe that we can make the finals and after a season they had last year (NBL1 North semi-finalists) and the season I came off, I’m very excited to see what we can do.” Williams said he looks forward to joining Rip City and forming a formidable back court combination with captain Isaih Tueta. “I’ve played against some of the guys and had some battles,” he said. “Especially Isaih Tueta. I’m very excited to play alongside him and see how I can help build on a great season they had last year.” Like many of his Rip City teammates, the idyllic location is also a strong draw card. “I don’t get to go to beaches much, so to get to live and play close is a dream,” Williams said.

The Wakka Wakka and Gangulu man will look to continue promotion of the game in indigenous communities. “I think promotion for basketball in indigenous communities is very important. There is a lot of talent out there and basketball is another pathway that can lead them to something bigger, even if that is on or off the court,” the 24-year-old said.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have played in the indigenous basketball team for the past couple of years. I’ve also been a part of the ICBL, which is a competition for indigenous kids to get opportunity to play in a national tournament.

“I would love to get opportunity to help hold a little camp or session for any indigenous kids up on the Sunny Coast which would be pretty awesome.” USC’s NBL1 season starts in April with the first six rounds on the road due to Suncorp Super Netball but Rip City’s run home will be mostly at home.

Rip City are looking forward to the first home game on the 11th June vs Southern District Spartans. The finals will be played in August-September after a 15-round regular season. To see all of the NBL1 North games live or for more info on the league go to www.nbl1.com.au
