SC Rip City Men 97 def Mackay Meteors 80 USC Rip City won their fifth straight NBL1 North game with a 97-80 victory over Mackay Meteors at USC Sport Stadium on Sunday.

Rip City, with a 5-2 win-loss record, sit in fifth place on the ladder with wins against second-placed Mackay (6-2), third Brisbane (6-3) and fourth Townsville (5-3). USC forward Tanner Krebs scored a game-high 34 points and team-high 13 rebounds. The Brisbane Bullets star, who averages 28.75 points per game after four games, hit 4 of 19 from deep and 6 of 8 from the charity stripe. The Rip City backcourt of Isaih Tueta (22 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists) and Kyle Zunic (18 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists) combined for 40 points, while forward Louis Ilton added 12 points. USC used a 14-2 run to close out the third quarter and take a 13-point lead into the final period. Krebs claimed bragging rights over Bullets teammate Harry Froling, who had a team-high 29 points and 15 rebounds for the visitors. Mackay’s Christopher Cedar (21 points) and Emmanuel Malou (17 points and 10 rebounds) also contributed for the away team. Rip City travel to South Pine Sports Complex on Saturday night to take on ninth-placed Northside Wizards (4-4). USC Rip City will play their next home game against the undefeated Logan Thunder on Friday 9 July.

USC Rip City Women 60 def by Mackay Meteorettes 94

Mackay Meteorettes won their seventh straight NBL1 North game with a 94-60 victory over USC Rip City at USC Sport Stadium on Sunday. Mackay centre Cayla George, who will play for Australia at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, scored a team-high 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Meteorettes to back-to-back wins on their Sunshine Coast road trip.


The Meteorettes, up seven at half time, used a 15-3 run after the main break to build a healthy lead and secure their top three spot on the ladder. Mackay’s offence was balanced with several options including Jacqui Zelenka (18 points), Chelsea Brook (15 points), Courtney Virgo (12 points), and Heidi Freeburn (10 points). Virgo’s baskets coming from 4 of 6 shooting from the perimeter. Rip City forward Alex Delaney scored a game-high 24 points with 5 of 10 three-pointers made, while Carlie Smith battled hard for her 14 points and 14 rebounds without taking a spell on the bench. Eighth-placed USC Rip City (3-4) travel to South Pine Sports Complex on Saturday night to take on 11-placed Northside Wizards (2-6). USC Rip City will play their next home game against the undefeated Logan Thunder on Friday 9 July.
