Ava Nason and Millie Willox are among some of the athletes who debuted in the NBL1 for USC Rip City to kick off their season.
The NBL1 usually has players 18 plus, so for a 16- and 15-year-old, respectively, this opportunity was no small feat.
Nason said her experience playing in the new league was intimidating yet thrilling.
“It was nerve racking of course, first big game, but it was an amazing experience, it was so so cool in front of everyone,” she said.
“Getting close to ten minutes for your first game is pretty unreal, so it was really really exciting.”
Willox shares similar feelings about the debut, and said she enjoyed the challenge.
“It was good to have a proper competition with everyone, it felt very nerve racking as well because there were so many people… but we warmed up to it,” she said.
Willox said it was thrilling playing in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
“I liked when I played defence all the crowd went crazy and the atmosphere was really high,” she said.
Nason said her highlight was achieving her firsts of the game.
“The highlight of the game for me was probably scoring my first points in a really high level of basketball…” she said.
“Also, I found that pulling my first rebound and having the ball in my possession for the first time, that was really cool too.”
These girls are on the road to success, so look out for their names, as this won’t be the last you hear of them.
