Sister Act: Fresno State graduate joins big sister at Rip City

USC Basketball Club sign Bree Delaney for NBL 1 North season

The University of Sunshine Coast Basketball Club have signed former Fresno State

guard Bree Delaney for the 2021 NBL1 North season.

Rip City women's coach Jamie Glover expects the 5’10” shooter will bring a great dynamic with her sister and WNBL champion Alex Delaney from the Canberra Capitals.

“Bree brings a great shooting percentage,” Glover said. “She brings more depth to our squad which is terrific.”

Delaney has recently returned to Australia after four years in the US collegiate system playing for

Fresno State Bulldogs in Fresno, California. COVID-19 took some shine off her final season but didn’t take away from the overall experience.

“It’s been really tough this last year. With graduating and having senior night, I missed my family throughout the season,” Delaney said. “It was very rewarding to face different challenges and overcome them throughout my four years at Fresno State. I felt I grew as a basketball player and as a young person. It was a privilege to be able to play the sport I love with some of my closest friends. I felt like each year was a different experience but overall, I really enjoyed my time.”

Delaney will hope to emulate her sister Alex and their mum Gail Henderson, who is a Sydney Flames champion and WNBL life member.

“I’m lucky enough to have such a close family and mum and Alex have been my role models as a young female basketball player my whole life,” Delaney said. “I’m so proud of Alex and everything she’s accomplished. She’s worked so hard, and I look up to her not only as a big sister but a

successful female athlete.”

Glover has announced seven players with a few more signings to come ahead of the May 13 season start. The squad including the Delaney sisters, Jasmine Forcadilla, Meghan Ditchburn, Liisa Ups, Layla Prince and Ashleigh Blake have begun training together at USC Stadium.

“I’m so excited to play with the team and have a successful season,” Delaney said. “I’m aiming to be a solid all-round player who can contribute to the team consistently. It will be an adjustment into a new team but I’m excited to get to know the other players and work together to win a

championship.”

USC's NBL1 season starts with the local derby against Phoenix at USC Stadium. The finals will be

played in August-September after a 14-round regular season.
